How Priya Used a Sewing Machine to Transform Her Life

With the support of VIHAAN, a young survivor received a sewing machine, through which she has been able to support her family.
At the age of 17, Priya* was rescued along with five other minor girls by the Anti-Trafficking Unit and the Detective Department Barrackpore Police in West Bengal in May 2023. She had been deceived and forced into sexual exploitation by the elder sister of her friend, a woman who lived in her neighbourhood.
Now Priya lives with and cares for her ailing mother, who has been diagnosed with psychosis and requires constant care and supervision, as well as her younger brother who earns a meagre income at a local bike repair shop that barely covers their daily needs. Despite these challenges, Priya shoulders the responsibility of caring for her mother with quiet strength and grace.
During a home visit from VIHAAN, Priya's mother shared that her daughter had learned sewing and expressed that a sewing machine would be tremendously helpful. Though Priya had received training and developed strong sewing skills, she hadn't completed the final classes and therefore didn't receive a certificate. However, her abilities were evident. VIHAAN, recognising her potential, decided to provide her with a sewing machine.
This support marked a meaningful turning point in Priya's life. No longer dependent on irregular jobs or waiting for opportunities, she transformed a small corner of her home into a workspace. What began with simple blouse stitching and alterations for neighbours has grown into steady orders from the community.
With each stitch, Priya regained her confidence. Her earnings, though modest, brought much-needed stability to the family. She could now afford her mother's basic medication and contribute to household expenses, something she once thought impossible.
The burden that once weighed heavily on Priya has now become her purpose. She not only supports her family but is also saving bit by bit with dreams of eventually opening a small tailoring unit. "This machine was more than just equipment—it was my second chance," she says with quiet pride.
Today, Priya stands as a powerful example of how timely support and trust can empower a survivor to rebuild her life with dignity and independence.
